Tuscan dialect for dummies: advanced level!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

BACCELLO<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Spring is the time of broad beans with pecorino cheese.\u00a0 So remember this term, \u201cbaccelli\u201d, which literally means broad beans. Try them with a glass or two (or three, or the whole bottle) of good wine! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BRINDELLONE <\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

This is the traditional name for the carriage of fireworks that is lit on Easter Sunday for the Scoppio del Carro (the explosion of the carriage). \u201cBrindellone\u201d is also used to refer to a tall, clumsy, dumb guy. I warn you, Tuscan humor is pretty sharp!<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

POPONE<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Popone means both \u201cmelon\u201d and \u201cdumb\/naive person\u201d. So watch out for the context: use it at the grocery stand in the market of San Lorenzo or Sant\u2019Ambrogio, but don\u2019t use it on the streets to address someone\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

But where does this latter meaning come from? In Homer, the term \u201co pepones\u201d (\u1f66 \u03c0\u03ad\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u03c2) means \u201ccoward, idiot, meathead\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

GRANATA<\/strong><\/span><\/em>
\n After having so much baccelli, pecorino cheese and poponi, you would want to clean the floor with a \u201cgranata\u201d. No, it is neither a pomegranate nor a grenade, enough of fruits and explosions! It just means broom. The name comes from the garnet-coloured cob of the sorghum plant used in the past to make brooms.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

GANZO <\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

This is a big compliment, used both for people and for things. It means both \u201cfun\/brilliant\u201d and \u201csmart\/clever\u201d. Besides \u201cganzo\u201d, you should also learn the expression \u201cGli\u00e8 ganzo di nulla!\u201d, meaning \u201cHe is hilarious\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

FARE COME IL NARDI, CHE DI PRESTO ARRIV\u00d2 TARDI<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

This rhyme literally means \u201cBeing like that Nardi mate: he was early, but ended up late\u201d. According to the tradition, Nardi was the surname of a captain of one of the Crusade ships sailing from Pisa to Jerusalem in 1099: the ship arrived when Jerusalem had already been conquered. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo even steal steam from a schiacciata\u201d: the \u201cschiacciata\u201d is a typical Florentine white flatbread pizza. This saying has two meanings: the first is negative and refers to an avid person, while the second refers to an astute person.<\/span><\/p>\n

But who cares about steam? Make sure you try a fragrant schiacciata in Florence and discover all about Florentine street food<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
