Bill Viola. Electronic Renaissance | Palazzo Strozzi, until 23rd july

The New Your Times describes this exhibition taking place at Palazzo Strozzi as “An Iconic Video Artist Takes Over Florence”. In fact, Bill Viola’s career in video art began in Florence during the 1970s where he lived for 18 months in Florence. His early experience in Florence had an important impact on Viola’s work and the exhibition aims to be a celebration if his bond with Tuscan history and art in such a perfect location as the reneissance architectures of Palazzo Strozzi.

The Calcio Storico Fiorentino is a very special soccer match that takes place once a year in the heart of the Renaissance heart of Florence, right in front of the Church of Santa Croce, The square in front of 15th century cathedral is transformed into a sand-covered football field where the game takes places under the under the strict gaze of a special judge – Dante Alighieri – whose statues is located on a side of the church façade. It is one of the most beloved traditional events by the florentines who are the main passionate supporters of the four competing teams composed by of 27 men each who represent four districts of Florence: San Giovanni, Santa Maria Novella, Santa Croce and Santa Spirito. It is a real well worth opportunity to discover Florence as a local and the pre-game festivities with parades and fireworks are an event themselves.

The Garden of Iris | Piazzale Michelangelo Florence, until 20th may

A special appointment during this time of the year is the temporary opening of thie botanical garden specializing in the cultivation of iris flowers, symbol of Florence since 1251. It is almost entirely devoted to iris plants, with more than 1,500 (variously 2,500) varieties and it was created in 1954 to give hospitality to a yearly International Competition for the best variety of Iris ‘The Florence Prize‘. Every year the garden hosts this competition whose challenge is to create a hybrid iris as close as possible to the red colour of the Florence coat of arm, that doesn’t exist in nature. The history of the Garden of Iris is very much connected to the name of our hotel, Il Guelfo Bianco, since the red colour of the traditional Florence coat of arm, a red iris on a white background, was invented by the Guelfi took the government of Florence
The Garden of Iris is open just one month every year, in the period of the bloomings, between April and May. This year it is open from April 25th to May 20th, from 10 am to 12:30 pm and from 3 pm to 7 pm.

When the days become longer and the sunset kisses the peaceful waters of the Arno, Florence will reveal her many shades among Renaissance, Contemporary Arts, Flowers blooming and Local traditions.
