THE EXHIBITION “AI WEIWEI. LIBERO” IN PALAZZO STROZZI, FLORENCEMin. reading
Here comes the season of art exhibitions in Florence
This autumn and winter, Florence is preparing to welcome art experts and lovers with exclusive events in the city.
Ai Weiwei has invaded Palazzo Strozzi in Florence. Invaded in the actual sense of the word: all available spaces have been used by this provocative, bold, brave and nonconformist Chinese artist who offers a unique experience to visitors. The exhibition spans 30 years of his career and it is the most complete exhibition ever held for the artist. For the first time Palazzo Strozzi in Florence has been used as a unitary gallery.
The exclusivity of this exhibition is also due to the fact that Ai Weiwei was able to work personally on the arrangement at the Palazzo, which is an exceptional event as the artist has only been allowed to travel freely for just the last year. An exhibition that compares the old with the new, with a provocative, strong, contemporary language, yet it is traditional at the same time, with works that range from sculptures to majestic installations, from photos to video.
The most famous Chinese living artist, who’s always been fighting for the freedom of expression, has arrived in Florence with his banners and his works under the spotlights of the critics. His 22 rubber boats will be hanging outside the façade of Palazzo Strozzi until the 22nd of January 2017.
As the president of the steering committee of the Fondazione Paolo Strozzi said, “The rubber boats that frame (it’s no wonder that “Frame” is also the title of the installation) renaissance mullioned windows are more moving and eloquent than whatever images we see on the news, because I don’t know how many of us, who are not either directly active in the Mediterranean scenario, citizen of Lampedusa or other centres, can actually imagine the tangible and three dimensional impact of the events recalled by the work. Seeing 22 rubber boats grabbing on to 22 of our renaissance mullioned windows hits a nerve that will keep hurting for a while”. An emotional and visual violence.
The exhibition has already provoked reactions and clashes between lovers and haters. Normal, when we are dealing with the works of an artist that always reminds us:
“The world is not changing if you don’t shoulder the burden of responsibility”
We wait for you at the Hotel Il Guelfo Bianco for a stay full of culture, history and beauty!
